Overview

Odorless. Slightly salty and bitter taste. Gradually deteriorates when exposed to light. Stable in air. 1g dissolves in about 4.5ml of water and 90ml of ethanol, slightly soluble in acetone, insoluble in ether and chloroform. pH of 10% aqueous solution is 3.2. Acidic aqueous solutions are stable, even when heated to 120°C (decomposes and sublimes). Maximum absorption wavelengths: (0.1mol/L hydrochloric acid) 290nm (ε840), (phosphate buffer, pH7) 253, 325nm (ε3700, 7100). Low toxicity, median lethal dose (rats, oral) 4000mg/kg. Used in biochemical research.
