Overview

Available phosphorus refers to the fraction of phosphorus in soil that can be absorbed by plants, which includes all water-soluble phosphorus, a portion of adsorbed phosphorus, and some organic phosphorus. It is one of the primary limiting factors for plant growth in soil. For determination, available phosphorus is extracted using the double acid extraction method, and its content is measured via the molybdenum-antimony colorimetric method. In this reaction, phosphate ions form a phosphomolybdenum blue complex which exhibits a characteristic absorption peak at 660 nm. The available phosphorus content is calculated by measuring the absorbance at this wavelength (660 nm).
