Overview

Bismuth subcarbonate is an odorless, tasteless white powder. It has a relative density of 6.86 and decomposes at 308 ℃ to form carbon dioxide and bismuth oxide. It gradually decomposes and deteriorates upon exposure to light. It is insoluble in water and ethanol, but readily soluble in mineral acids (nitric acid, hydrochloric acid) and concentrated acetic acid. It is also soluble in ammonium chloride solution and slightly soluble in alkali metal carbonate solutions.
Applications

Used in the pharmaceutical industry as an astringent and an X-ray diagnostic opaque agent. It can be used to treat gastric and duodenal ulcers, bacterial dysentery, amebic dysentery, acute mucosal exudative gastritis, enteritis and diarrhea. It is also used topically for skin diseases, eczema, sweat rash and burns.
