Overview
Oxaloacetate decarboxylase is a family of metal-dependent lyases that catalyze the irreversible decarboxylation of oxaloacetate to pyruvate and carbon dioxide. It is widely distributed in bacteria, archaea, and some eukaryotes. The enzyme participates in the tricarboxylic acid cycle anaplerotic reactions, energy metabolism, and the synthesis of small molecular carbon skeletons. Some membrane-bound isoforms can couple with sodium ion transmembrane transport to form an ion gradient for energy supply. Based on structure and localization, it can be divided into cytoplasmic soluble form (EC 4.1.1.112) and membrane-bound Na⁺-dependent form (EC 7.2.4.2). The former mostly relies on Mn²⁺/Mg²⁺, while the latter contains a biotin cofactor and functions as a sodium ion pump.
