Overview

Odorless. Slowly soluble in 12 parts cold water and 3.1 parts boiling water; soluble in water, insoluble in ethanol. Strong oxidizing agent. Irritating. Used in the preparation of potassium carbonate standard solutions. Used in the analysis of zinc, iodine, and arsenic. Used as an oxidizing agent in volumetric analysis.
Applications KIO3 can be used as a substitute for KI for radiation protection. Gamma-ray thermal degradation kinetics studies of KIO3 show that the decomposition rate increases after irradiation, while the activation energy decreases.
Potassium iodate (KIO3) can be used as an oxidizing agent to estimate hydrolyzable tannins (gallicin and ellagic acid tannin) in plant samples. It can also be used to prepare polyaniline, poly(o-aniline), poly(o-aniline), and TiO2 nanoparticles.
