Overview

Saxagliptin: A Long-Acting Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP-4) Enzyme Inhibitor
Saxagliptin is a long-acting dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) enzyme inhibitor which is a new class of anti-hyperglycemic agents. Released into the small intestine in response meals, incretins such as Glukagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulin tropic polypeptide (GIP) are known to be gastrointestinal hormones that promote insulin secretion and suppress Glukagon secretion in a glucose concentration-dependent manner. Saxagliptin inhibits the activity of DPP-4 that degrades and inactivates GLP-1 and GIP. Through this inhibition, saxagliptin increases the blood concentration of active GLP-1, and exerts its hypoglycemic effect through increasing insulin secretion and reducing Glukagon secretion.
