Overview

It has a strong aromatic odor and a pungent taste. Its color darkens and it becomes thicker with prolonged storage. It is soluble in ether, glacial acetic acid, chloroform, and 1-2 volumes of 70% alcohol; it is almost insoluble in water. Used for ammonia detection. Used in microscopes. Used in the manufacture of fragrances.
