Overview
Mammalian carboxylesterase (CarE), also known as aliphatic esterase (aliesterase), is widely distributed across tissues and organs and belongs to the serine hydrolase family. CarE catalyzes the hydrolysis of endogenous and exogenous substances containing ester bonds, amide bonds, or thioester bonds, but it does not hydrolyze acetylcholine or its analogues. CarE is involved in lipid transport and metabolism, and it plays a role in the detoxification and metabolism of various drugs, environmental toxins, and carcinogens. Organophosphorus pesticides can bind to and inhibit CarE activity. CarE catalyzes the hydrolysis of 1-naphthyl acetate to release naphthol, which is then coupled with Fast Blue to produce a colored product. The activity of CarE is calculated by measuring the rate of increase in absorbance at 450 nm.
