Overview

TF-1 erythroblasts are isolated from bone marrow derived from a 35-year-old Asian male with severe pancytopenia in 1987. The cells provide a good system for investigating the proliferation and differentiation of myeloid progenitor cells.TF-1 cells exhibit responsiveness to many other lymphokines and cytokines, including IL-1, IL-4, IL-6, IL-9, IL-11, IL-13, SCF, LIF, and NGF. They don't express blood group antigen A or carbonic anhydrase I. Morphological and cytochemical properties, as well as the expression of globin genes, suggest that they are of erythroid lineage. Hematin and delta-aminolevulinic acid induce hemoglobin synthesis in TF-1 cells, while TPA induces significant differentiation of TF-1 cells into macrophage-like cells. TF-1 cells are unique due to their responsiveness to multiple cytokines and providing a good system for detecting bone marrow progenitor cells.
