Overview

FITC-Q-dextran is a positively charged polysaccharide labelled with FITC. Unlike DEAE-dextrans, Q-dextrans will be charged over a wide range of pH (pH 4-10). These products will have a much stronger net charge than corresponding DEAE-dextrans and thus give enhanced responses in systems where this effect is important. All batches are checked for molecular weight, degree of substitution, loss on drying and free FITC. Aladdin produces a FITC-Q-dextran with a molecular weight of 10 kDa. FITC-Q-dextran is supplied as a yellow powder.

Structure

Dextran is a branched polysaccharide elaborated by the bacteria Leuconostoc mesenteroides B512F. Unlike the cationic Diethylaminoethyl (DEAE)-dextran, Q-dextran carries only quaternary amine groups. The nitrogen content is approximately 2% (by elemental analysis) which corresponds to approximately one quaternary ammonium group for every four glucose units.

Spectral data

FITC-polysucrose has an excitation maximum of 493 and an emission maximum at 523 nm at pH 9.

Application

FITC-dextran is mainly used for studying permeability and microcirculation. The Q-groups will impart an overall positive charge to the molecule, which may be valuable in gaining information on the permeability characteristics of cell membranes and tissues. FITC-Q-dextran have a much stronger net charge than corresponding DEAE-dextran.
