Summary
By the early 1970s, the use of amphetamines by athletes had declined significantly because of the ease with which doping tests could detect their use. They were replaced by a variety of anabolic steroids, introduced since the 1950s, that caused muscle growth and strength enhancement while seriously interfering with the body's hormonal balance. It was not until 1975 that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced that anabolic steroids would be banned because no accurate and reliable test had been developed. Therefore, the detection of anabolic steroids is of great importance not only in sport but also in food safety.
