Overview

Nitrate reductase (NR, EC 1.7.1.3) is widely present in plants. It is a key and inducible enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of nitrate nitrogen to ammonium nitrogen in plants, influencing crop yield and quality. This kit can detect nitrate reductase activity in plant tissues, bacterial or cellular samples. The principle is that NR catalyzes the reduction of nitrate to nitrite: NO₃⁻ + NADH + H⁺ → NO₂⁻ + NAD⁺ + H₂O. The generated nitrite can quantitatively form a red azo compound with sulfanilic acid and α-naphthylamine under acidic conditions. This red azo compound exhibits a maximum absorption peak at 540 nm, allowing for detection by spectrophotometry.
