Drugs of abuse in the horse racing industry contain a wide variety of chemicals that are primarily analyzed by taking complex urine samples, making rapid, validated, diagnostic detection of these drugs at low concentrations difficult. Typically, quantitative analysis is performed in selected ion reaction detection mode on triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, but this assay does not allow monitoring of diagnostic fragments for structural confirmation and requires derivatization and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for further confirmation.
