hemagglutination inhibition test

Summary

Viruses with hemagglutinin (HA) can agglutinate human or animal erythrocytes, which is known as hemagglutination phenomenon. Hemagglutination phenomenon can be inhibited by the corresponding antibody, which is known as hemagglutination inhibition test, based on the principle that the corresponding antibody binds to the virus and prevents the HA on the surface of the virus from binding to the erythrocytes.
