Bone Densitometry Experiment

Summary

Bone densitometry is the most commonly used analytical method for detecting osteoporosis and bone mineral defects in humans. It is a measurement of bone density based on the differential absorption properties of X-rays (i.e., different densities of tissue absorb different amounts of X-rays as they pass through an object). Studies have shown that an X-ray energy of 35,000 eV has the highest resolution for imaging soft tissue and 70,000 eV for imaging bone tissue.

Principle

The basic principle of the bone density analysis experiment is that DXA adopts the simultaneous emission of dual-energy, using high and low energy X-rays to penetrate the tissue, with less difference in soft tissue and more difference in bone tissue, which are counted by the corresponding probes, and then processed by the computer, and the counts of high and low energy are subtracted from each other, eliminating the counts of soft tissues and leaving the counts of bone tissues, which are then computed by the counting equations to get the value of the bone density.

Materials and Instruments

Equipment:
① Bone densitometer: PIXImus2, bone density standard mouse molds
② Mouse plate for bone densitometer (Supplier: Inside Outside Sales, LLC.)
③ Radiation shielding, etc.

Move

The basic procedure of the bone density analysis experiment can be divided into the following steps:
A. Anesthetize the mice.
B. Weigh the mice and record.
C

. Measure the body length of the mice and record.

D. Place the comatose mice into the DEXA analyzer.
E. After images are taken, remove the mice and place them on a hot table until they regain consciousness and monitor them closely.
