Overview

Formaldehyde, also known as methanal, is an organic compound that typically exists as a colorless gas with a pungent odor, irritating the eyes and nose. Formaldehyde has various industrial applications. Materials commonly used in interior decoration, such as wood panels, paints, carpets, and wallpapers, contain formaldehyde, and the incomplete combustion of tobacco can also release formaldehyde. In medicine, formaldehyde is often used as a preservative and disinfectant. Currently, excessive formaldehyde levels in textile printing and dyeing auxiliaries primarily originate from dispersing agents like MF, chelating agents containing methylene phosphonic acid, acrylamide N-methylol auxiliaries, leather tanning agents, nylon auxiliaries, and formaldehyde condensation products of phenol and its derivatives. With the successive introduction of ecological textile standards both domestically and internationally, the ecological safety of domestic textiles has garnered widespread attention. In the textile auxiliaries industry, formaldehyde is widely used as a reactant to enhance the durability of auxiliaries on textiles, such as in resin finishing agents, fixing agents, and adhesives. Common methods for detecting formaldehyde include spectrophotometry and chromatography. Spectrophotometry is relatively quick and convenient, making it more widely used in daily applications. It can effectively detect formaldehyde content in textile samples. The detection principle of this kit is based on the absorption of formaldehyde by water, followed by its reaction with acetylacetone under pH 6.0 conditions. Upon heating, a stable yellow compound is formed. The absorbance of this yellow compound is measured using a spectrophotometer at 412 nm. Within a certain concentration range, the absorbance of the yellow compound is linearly related to the formaldehyde concentration, allowing for the calculation of formaldehyde concentration in the sample. This product is primarily used for detecting formaldehyde released from indoor air, textiles, and similar sources. It is intended for research purposes only and is not suitable for clinical diagnosis or other applications.

After being absorbed by water, formaldehyde reacts with acetylacetone at pH 6.0 under heating conditions to form a stable yellow‑colored compound. The absorbance is measured at 412 nm using a spectrophotometer. Within a certain concentration range, the absorbance of the yellow compound shows a linear relationship with formaldehyde concentration, from which the formaldehyde concentration in the sample can be calculated. When the sample volume is 1.0 mL, the colorimetric assay method exhibits a good linear relationship in the concentration range of 1.0-20 μg/mL.
