Methanol-d4 can be used as a solvent in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis for the characterization of phenolic compounds separated from olive oil using high-performance liquid chromatography. Through the biotransformation of red yeast, vanillic acid and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxystyrene are formed.
