Before taking blood, the strongest part of the heartbeat should be detected, usually in the middle of the left edge of the sternum, and the most obvious part of the heartbeat should be selected for puncture. The needle should be slightly longer and thinner to avoid bleeding from the puncture hole after surgery. Because guinea pigs are small, it is generally not necessary to fix the animal on the dissection table, and blood can be collected by the assistant holding the front and hind limbs. Adult guinea pigs should have no more than 10 ml of blood collected.
