Experimental detection of micronuclei in the root tip of fava bean

Summary

This experiment will help you to understand the various types and principles of chromosome aberrations and to understand the general methods of monitoring environmental contamination at the root tips of fava beans.

Operation method

observation method

Principle

Various physical and chemical factors from polluted environments can have different effects on the body. Some of them can cause chromosome damage, such as micronuclei, chromosome bridges, chromosome breaks, chromosome loops and so on. In this experiment, the above phenomena can be observed by using environmental effluents and drugs to treat the root tip cells of broad bean.

Materials and Instruments

fava bean
Water
Microscope Slide Coverslip

Move

1. Treatment of germinated broad beans, drugs or sources of contamination.
2. Staining, pressing and observation.
3. Chromosomal aberrations were recorded and the rate of micronuclei was counted.
