Overview
Nitrite Reductase (NiR) is an enzyme capable of catalyzing the reduction of nitrite. It is widely present in microorganisms and plants and serves as a key enzyme in the natural nitrogen cycle. By degrading nitrite into NO or NH₃, NiR helps reduce the accumulation of nitrite nitrogen in the environment, thereby mitigating the toxic effects of nitrite buildup on organisms.
Assay Principle: Nitrite reductase reduces NO₂⁻ to NO, decreasing the amount of NO₂⁻ available to participate in the diazotization reaction that produces a purple-red compound. Thus, the change in absorbance at 540 nm reflects the activity of nitrite reductase.
