The free radical doctrine of aging holds that aging is closely related to free radical-induced lipid peroxidation of biological membranes leading to membrane structural damage and functional inactivation. Under physiological conditions, free radicals are continuously produced and eliminated by the enzyme system that defends against free radicals in the body, thus maintaining a physiologically low, beneficial, harmless, stable and balanced concentration of free radicals.
