Measurement of immune cell phagocytosis

Summary

The body has phagocytosis (phagocytosis) function of the cells called phagocytes, including monocyte macrophages and neutrophils two categories. Phagocytes phagocytosis, digestion, removal of invasive bacteria and other foreign bodies, as well as the human body produced by aging, injury, cancer cells and necrotic tissue, is an important part of the body's inherent immunity. The measurement of immune cell phagocytosis function mainly includes macrophage phagocytosis function and neutrophil phagocytosis function.

Principle

According to the different experimental methods, the corresponding principles are also different:

The basic principle of mononuclear macrophage phagocytosis detection is that macrophages are large phagocytes fixed in tissues, with the function of phagocytosis and digestion of foreign particles; starch can cause non-infectious inflammatory exudation in the abdominal cavity of experimental animals, and more macrophages are gathered locally in the abdominal cavity; chicken erythrocytes are injected into the abdominal cavity of experimental animals, and the phagocytosis capacity of macrophages on chicken erythrocytes in the abdominal cavity can be detected.

The basic principle of neutrophil phagocytosis test is that neutrophils (i.e. small phagocytes) in the blood have the ability to phagocytose bacteria and other foreign particles, mixing fresh blood and bacteria, and staining the smear after a suitable period of time, i.e., it is possible to observe the bacteria which have been phagocytosed into neutrophils but have not been digested yet.

Appliance

Decreased number or dysfunction of phagocytes can lead to non-specific immunodeficiency, so testing their phagocytosis can be helpful in diagnosing certain diseases and determining the level of non-specific immunity in the body.
