Experiments on the determination of the growth zones of stems and leaves of monocotyledonous plants

Summary

Different stages in the plant growth cycle show certain rhythmic patterns, and the growth of plants or organs is often limited to certain areas, so the observation of the plant growth cycle and growth areas is used to have a perceptual understanding of the rhythmic and localized patterns of growth and to prepare for the study of artificial regulation and control of the growth process. When 4-5 leaves appear in a corn seedling, two seedlings are selected, and the exposed part of the young leaves is marked with a fine line at 5 mm intervals in drawing ink, and a small hole is pierced with a dissecting needle at 5 mm intervals from the base of the seedling.

Operation method

Experiments on the determination of the growth zones of stems and leaves of monocotyledonous plants

Materials and Instruments

Corn seedling
Dissecting needles, brushes, drawing ink, rulers.

Move

When 4-5 leaves appear on a maize seedling, select two seedlings and draw thin lines at 5 mm intervals in plotting ink on the exposed portion of the young leaf, and another small hole with a dissecting needle at 5 mm intervals from the base of the seedling. after 1-2 weeks, observe the growth of each part of the leaf and plot the representation. Re-measure the distance between the lines and the intervals of the small holes appearing in the new leaf, tabulate the results and record the results to show in which part of the leaf the growth area of the monocotyledonous plant leaf is located. As you observe, note how the top of the monocotyledon leaf differs from the base in terms of age and tenderness.

At the beginning of corn pulling, the stems were divided by perforation at 5 mm intervals, and after 1-2 weeks, the stems were cut for observation, the distribution of the holes was plotted, and measurements of the distances between the holes were included in a table indicating in which part of the stem the monocotyledonous plant style growth area was located.

Common Problems

Discussion of results

Based on the results of the experiment discuss how monocotyledons and dicotyledons have similarities and differences in the way roots, stems, and leaves grow?
