Summary
In plants Diosgenin is present in combination with glucose and rhamnose to form Dioscin. When extracting and separating, Dioscin is generally hydrolyzed into Dioscin and monosaccharides (glucose, rhamnose) with dilute acid first. Because Dioscin is insoluble in water and mixed in plant residues, Dioscin can be extracted directly from plant residues with organic solvents (e.g. petroleum ether).
