Protein Function
Argininosuccinate synthase 1 (Ass1) can catalyze the formation of arginine succinate from citrulline and aspartic acid. Under the action of argininosuccinate lyase (Asl), arginine is produced. Arginine is hydrolyzed by arginase to produce urea and ornithine, which can be metabolized by ornithine decarboxylase to produce polyamines; It can also regenerate citrulline under the action of ornithine transaminase, forming a urea cycle; In addition, arginine can also generate nitric oxide (NO) and citrulline through the action of nitric oxide synthase (NOS), forming the citrulline nitric oxide cycle. Therefore, Ass1 is a key rate limiting enzyme for the production of arginine, urea, and NO.
