Overview

Triisopropylsilane (TIPS) is an organosilicon compound that is low in toxicity, easy to handle, and capable of selectively reducing various functional groups, making it suitable as a reducing agent in organic synthesis. In the presence of Lewis acids (e.g., titanium tetrachloride), it can selectively reduce ketones and aldehydes to their corresponding alkanes, and epoxides to their corresponding alcohols.
