Glucagon is a peptide hormone that is produced by the pancreas and is involved in the regulation of glucose metabolism and blood sugar levels. It acts on the liver to stimulate the breakdown of glycogen into glucose, which is then released into the bloodstream to increase blood sugar levels. Glucagon also stimulates the production of glucose by the liver from non-carbohydrate sources, such as amino acids and fatty acids, through a process called gluconeogenesis.
